Most photographs of pilots from WWII feature them sporting silk scarves, mainly sourced from off-cuts of silk parachutes to hand. As well as providing a soft, luxurious intermediary between hulking jackets and uniform, it also had a whole host of other uses, including wiping fogged goggles, windows and flight instruments.
